The women's 100-meter freestyle was Cate Campbell's to lose, as the Australia sprinter and current world-record holder in the event was expected to blow away the field. But it was upstarts Simone Manuel and Penny Oleksiak who pulled one of the biggest upsets of the Rio Games.
Campbell was first to the wall at the halfway mark but Manuel, swimming in Lane 3, was hot on her tail as the eight-woman final came entered the final 20 meters of the race. That's when the 19-year-old American and 16-year-old Canadian found another gear and got their hands on the wall first, tying for gold with a new Olympic record of 52.
