Monica Puig won Puerto Rico's first Olympic gold medal Saturday, upsetting Angelique Kerber for the women's singles title in Rio.
The world's 34th-ranked player had already beaten the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova to reach the final and she once again belied her underdog status to secure a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over the second-seeded German.

Consequently, the 22-year-old etches her name into the history books as the first Olympic gold medalist from Puerto Rico, and it was just reward for a fantastic display of aggressive tennis against the heavily favored Kerber.
