England's Justin Rose became the first golfer to win gold at the Olympics since Canada's George Lyon in 1904 Sunday in Rio when he posted a 4-under 67 to get to 16 under and outduel Henrik Stenson.
The two major champions, who finished 3-0-0 as teammates in 2014 Ryder Cup, battled side by side all day. But Rose birdied the par-5 18th to win after Stenson three-putted for bogey.

Rose faced some nervy moments on the back nine when he lost two drives well left, but he hung on to enjoy a warm applause by the sold-out crowd watching at Olympic Golf Course.
