Rio Olympics 2016: Golf tees off after 112-year absence — and it's right down the middle

A new day in international golf dawned with bright sunshine as the game returned to the Olympics for the first time since 1904.

Given the honor of ending the 112-year absence, Brazil's Adilson da Silva hit his first drive down the right side of the fairway at the Olympic Golf Course shortly after 8:30 a.m. Rio time (6:30 a.m. ET), the early start necessitated by winter's short days in the Southern Hemisphere. The last group, highlighted by British Open winner Henrik Stenson, goes off at 10 a.m. ET.

“It’s the end of a long journey,” International Golf Federation president Peter Dawson said (via USA Today).
