First-time Olympian Chase Kalisz kicked off an anticipated heavy Olympic medal count for Team USA with a silver in the men's 400-meter individual medley Saturday in Rio.
Kalisz, the top seed after season a then-career best of 4 minutes, 8.12 seconds in preliminary heats on Saturday, fell behind the Japan duo of Daiya Seto and Kosuke Hagino but used a strong breaststroke leg to make up ground on the duo. Kalisz trailed Hagino by 0.74 seconds entering the final freestyle leg and was unable to pull out the come-from-behind victory, falling to Hagino by 0.70 seconds with a runner-up time of 4:06.
