One hundred twenty years ago, 14 Americans sailed to Greece to compete in the first modern Olympic Games.
Eight of those men won a total of 11 gold medals during their stay, achievements that didn't garner much recognition at the time but laid the foundation for what would become the most dominant country in Olympic history.
Saturday, the United States won its 1,000th Olympic gold medal when the women's 4x100 medley relay team of Kathleen Baker, Lilly King, Dana Vollmer and Simone Manuel won the penultimate swimming event of the Rio Games.
That total far outdistances the next-highest country, Russia, which has 577 golds if counting all the various incarnations under which it has competed.
