The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots appear to be on the verge of signing the veteran receiver Reggie Wayne.
While Wayne racked up impressive numbers over his long career with the Indianapolis Colts, like many other great wideouts before him, he had reached the age when his team no longer considered him indispensable.
As of early Tuesday, there was no official announcement of the signing, but Coach Bill Belichick said on WEEI radio, “I think we’ve agreed,” and New England players openly welcomed Wayne to the team.
The Patriots are in need of a receiver because Brandon Gibson, signed from the Miami Dolphins in the off-season, tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is out for the year.
