Commissioner Roger Goodell is one of the most powerful people in professional sports. In general, this has been great news for NFL owners, who have made hundreds of millions of dollars during Goodell's tenure. Meanwhile, NFL players have been less impressed, primarily because Goodell has served as judge, jury and executioner when it comes to player punishments.
The commissioner has often been called unfair, a perception that wasn't helped by the Deflategate silliness, which ended with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, arguably one of the league's most popular players, serving a four-game suspension for whatever role he played in slightly deflating footballs.
