Real Madrid Faces Expulsion From Cup Over Ineligible Player

MADRID — Real Madrid keeps running into difficulties, as much off as on the field.

First came the club’s fax problems that scuttled the signing of a star goalkeeper from Manchester United. And now the team faces a possible disqualification from the Spanish King’s Cup competition, after another administrative gaffe on Wednesday night, when it fielded an ineligible Russian player in its victory over lowly Cádiz.

The player, Denis Cheryshev, made an unexpected but notable appearance, scoring the opening goal in Madrid’s 3-1 victory. However, Cheryshev, 24, was supposed to be serving a ban after receiving three yellow cards during the competition last season, when he was playing for Villarreal.
