Exaggerator finally got his win over Nyquist in his fifth try. The colt won the 2016 Preakness by several lengths, downing the unbeaten Nyquist, who had defeated him in four previous races in which both ran.
This year's Preakness was run over a muddy track, just like last year when American Pharoah dominated the Preakness through the slop en route to a Triple Crown.
The Preakness Stakes is a 1-3/16 mile, Grade I stakes race for 3-year-old horses with a $1.5 million purse run on dirt. It's the second jewel of American horse racing's Triple Crown, held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby and three weeks prior to the Belmont Stakes.
