BALTIMORE — The Kentucky Derby winner American Pharoah won the 140th running of the Preakness Stakes on a rainy Saturday at Pimlico Race Course to keep his Triple Crown bid alive.
American Pharoah was ridden by last year’s Derby and Preakness-winning jockey Victor Espinoza.
American Pharoah and Dortmund, the third-place finisher in the Derby who finished fourth, are both trained by the Hall of Famer Bob Baffert and were among the most-buzzed-about horses on the Triple Crown trail.
The eight-horse field that lined up in the starting gate of the muddy track for the Triple Crown’s second race was the smallest since 2000, when Red Bullet upset the Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus.
