As embarrassed and, yes, incompetent as the NFL looks after Sunday's Hall of Fame game was canceled, the system worked. The players were protected from a dangerous situation, thanks in no small part to a player who was injured at last year's game.
Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL that he and the players' union blamed on the field conditions, spent this offseason pushing for the creation of a joint committee that allows the league and player to monitor field conditions.
As the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette noted, the committee came too late for Suisham, who was cut by the Steelers because he's still unable to compete for his old job.
