WASHINGTON — The United States men’s national team responded well to its first test after a disappointing Gold Cup, coming from behind to defeat a strong Peru on a hot and humid night at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium.
The United States team was missing two key players: Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley, who decided to remain with their M.L.S. clubs. Coach Jurgen Klinsmann opted to play many of his other veterans, and it paid off as the game wore on.
After conceding the opening goal to Peru in the first half, the Americans came to life with a series of scoring chances to conclude the first 45 minutes.
