A Junior Stanislas brace and further goals from Charlie Daniels, Steve Cook, Callum Wilson and Dan Gosling ensured the Tigers endured an afternoon to forget at the Vitality Stadium.
Hull sits 16th in the table with the worst goal difference in the Premier League after conceding 17 goals in its last four league games.
And Phelan, who was named on Friday as the Hull head coach until the end of the season, told BBC Sport: "I feel very embarrassed.
