Even as Penn State president Eric Barron condemned reports of new allegations against the school and late football coach Joe Paterno, a school spokesman on Sunday confirmed that settlements were made to Jerry Sandusky's alleged abuse victims four decades before his arrest.
Penn State spokesman Lawrence Lokman told The Associated Press the earliest year of alleged abuse covered in Penn State's legal settlements is 1971.
Barron wrote in a letter on the Penn State website, "allegations have surfaced from individuals who claim to be Sandusky victims and from unidentified individuals about the alleged knowledge of former University employees.
