On Tennis: Milos Raonic Crashes the Australian Open Semifinals Party

MELBOURNE, Australia — His serve might be a brute, but Milos Raonic has a sophisticated side.

Back in a Grand Slam semifinal, he finished his postmatch news conference at the Australian Open on Wednesday night by fielding questions about his visit to the National Gallery of Victoria’s Andy Warhol and Ai Weiwei exhibit.

“Magnificent in many ways,” he said. “I think that whatever iteration you see of Andy Warhol’s life has sort of been redefined over many years due to his unfortunate passing. But Weiwei’s story is constantly building, and you’re hearing something different.”

Talking about forehands and backhands seems rather a step down after this sort of dialogue, but Raonic, a bright Canadian who likes the occasional midtournament field trip, is definitely still focused on the essential in Melbourne.
