UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Jason Day looked steady on the practice tee before Sunday’s fourth round of the United States Open. Gone were the wobbly strides from Saturday. He stood straight and moved with a purpose. With powerful swings, he smashed soaring drives, and with precision, he fired crisp iron shots.
There was even the occasional smile on his face, something that usually comes easily to Day, an affable Australian, but has largely been missing since a dizzy spell caused him to collapse as he finished his final hole Friday afternoon.
As one of four golfers tied for the lead entering the final round at Chambers Bay Golf Course, Day did not need to be reminded of the opportunity before him.
