Notre Dame escapes Virginia on final-minute TD

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Backup quarterback DeShone Kizer threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Will Fuller with 12 seconds left Saturday and No. 11 Notre Dame beat Virginia in a thrilling finish, 34-27.

The Fighting Irish (2-0), who had lost the lead when Virginia scored with 1:54 remaining, won despite quarterback Malik Zaire going down with an ankle injury.

Zaire was hurt in the third quarter, before Virginia (0-2) rallied to take the lead, and Kizer came to the rescue on the final drive. He ran 4 yards for a first down on fourth-and-2 from the Notre Dame 28, and later found the speedy Fuller behind Maurice Canady down the left sideline for the winning touchdown.
