It’s been a while since the Cubs or Pirates have won a World Series.
The Pirates last won in 1979. That team featured a lot of strong personalities: Willie Stargell, Dave Parker, Bert Blyleven, John Candelaria and Phil Garner were the leaders. “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge — the team’s theme song — was played during the post-game celebration in Pittsburgh, and at every American wedding since.
It’s been longer than a century since the Cubs (some would say “cursed Cubs”) have lifted the trophy. In 1908, Orval Overall — owner of one of the greatest baseball names ever — threw a three-hitter to win the series for Chicago’s north side.
