Before the second pick of the 2016 NHL Draft was made, there were already two trades.
The Blackhawks dealt center Andrew Shaw to Montreal while the Canadiens sent forward Lars Eller to the Washington Capitals.

For Eller, the Canadiens received second-round picks in 2017 and 2018 from the Capitals. To acquire Shaw, Montreal used a second-round pick (39th overall) this year while Chicago will also get a second-rounder (45th overall) from Canadiens, who had acquired the pick from the Minnesota Wild.
