NHL doctor allegedly knew Derek Boogaard failed 14 drug tests before death

An NHL doctor is under investigation for how he handled Derek Boogaard's health before the hockey player died at 28 from an accidental overdose while recovering from a concussion.

Boogaard made his living in the NHL as an enforcer, and his death in 2011 sparked controversy after it was discovered he had the brain disease CTE. His parents filed lawsuits against the NHL and its players' union over their son's death as well as a complaint against Dr. Brian Shaw.

Shaw co-founded the NHL and NHL Players’ Association’s substance abuse program with Dr. David Lewis. California state medical regulators cleared Shaw of any wrongdoing in Boogaard's death.
