NFL's Deflategate response will only add controversy

Over the weekend, Fox Sports and other outlets reported that next season the NFL would introduce stricter procedures for checking the inflation of footballs during games. These procedures will have a team of two referees recording the PSI of the footballs before the games, referees who will also be numbering the balls 1-12 for each game, and performing random spot-checks of the footballs at halftime and after games.

This is what the NFL does. Whenever it embroils itself in stupid controversy, it makes more regulations and rules to try and prevent controversy in the future.

What’s so stupid, and what the NFL fails to recognize, is that the more complicated and insane it makes the rulebook, the more likely the league is to have controversy.
