NFL to look into ways to help refs in playoffs

The NFL with conduct a conference call with top officials in football operations, officiating and beyond this week to determine ways to further assist in-game officials in the postseason, sources said. Commissioner Roger Goodell himself is very interested in the process, and optimistic that some thing concrete could come from it.

Specifically, the officials will discuss possibly expanding the ability of Dean Blandino, the head of officiating, to communicate more regularly with in-game officials during the playoff games. It is a priority for the league and something that makes sense for the playoffs, when there is just one game going on at a time and all of the eyes at the central officiating office in New York are focused on that game in real-time.
