Muscle tear forces Maria Sharapova out of grass-court tournaments for the season

A muscle tear has forced Maria Sharapova out of a Wimbledon qualifier — and grass-court tournaments altogether — for the season, the Russian tennis player announced on her Facebook page Saturday.

The 30-year-old Sharapova made her return to competitive tennis this year after a positive test for meldonium had resulted in a 15-month ban from the sport.

The four-time Grand Slam singles champion retired in the second round of the Italian Open with a thigh injury on May 16. Earlier that day, Sharapova had learned that she would not be given a wild card to the French Open at Roland Garros due to her doping ban.
