Missy Franklin, Natalie Coughlin fail to qualify for Olynpics in 100-meter backstroke

The women's 100-meter backstroke gold medalists from the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics will not repeat as champions in Rio. Americans Missy Franklin and Natalie Coughlin failed to finish in the top two of the event at team trials in Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday.

Franklin, who swam the semifinals of the 200-meter freestyle just minutes before the final of the 100-meter backstroke, finished seventh with a time of 1 minute, 0.24 seconds. The American record-holder in the 100-meter backstroke still hasn't secured a spot on the Olympic team after the third day of the meet.

Coughlin, the 2004 and 2008 Olympic gold medalist in the event, failed to finish in the top two for the second consecutive Olympic trials despite owning the top seed entering prelims in an event in which the 33-year-old owns the fourth-fastest time ever.
