BUENOS AIRES — The most-anticipated match of the Argentine soccer season was halted here Thursday night when players of the visiting team were attacked with what appeared to be pepper spray.
The match between the archrivals Boca Juniors and River Plate was suspended after several River players emerged from the tunnel for the second half with burning eyes and orange stains around the collars of their jerseys.
The teams were playing the second leg of their series in the knockout phase of the Copa Libertadores, South America’s premier club competition. The score was 0-0, but River had a 1-0 lead from the first leg.
