DARLINGTON, S.C. — Joe Gibbs Racing's so-called fifth wheel has now taken home two of NASCAR's crown-jewel races — the Coca-Cola 600 and Sunday's Southern 500.
But Martin Truex Jr. and his single-car team based in Denver have been building momentum since losing the Daytona 500 by just inches to begin the season.
Daytona was the first time Furniture Row Racing drove a chassis built by Joe Gibbs Racing and used an engine built by Toyota Racing Development. The two teams also share loop data and equipment.
"It’s just an amazing partnership, amazing teammates over at (Joe) Gibbs (Racing) that we share information with and it’s just been one of those years that I feel like we can have eight or 10 wins and hopefully we’ll be able to get them all in the Chase," Truex said after the race.
