Maria Sharapova Holds Off CoCo Vandeweghe at Wimbledon

WIMBLEDON, England — CoCo Vandeweghe put up a noble effort in her first Grand Slam quarterfinal Tuesday, but she could not hold off the ferocity and experience of Maria Sharapova, who won, 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-2.

Sharapova, the No. 4 seed and the 2004 champion here, earned her first spot in a Wimbledon semifinal since she was a runner-up in 2011. She celebrated by pirouetting and blowing a kiss to the fans. She will play the winner of the match between Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka, which was up next on Centre Court.

Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain advanced to a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time, with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Timea Bacsinszky.
