When Lou Lamoriello, 72, stepped aside as Devils general manager in May at age 72, he quipped that “his age was no secret” and that he “had to be honest with” himself.
Yet Thursday — in his traditional, shocking fashion — Lamoriello became an N.H.L. general manager once again, resigning from his post as Devils president to join the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Lamoriello, a former Providence College hockey coach and athletic director, had been the boss in New Jersey since 1987, four years after Wayne Gretzky referred to the team as a “Mickey Mouse organization.
