NEW YORK — Baseball already has never-ending controversy over unwritten rules. The 2016 season is off and running with a discussion about the written rules.
The Astros’ 5-3 victory over the Yankees on Tuesday hinged on Rule 5.09(a)(11), which was implemented correctly by home plate umpire Dana DeMuth, but which left New York grasping for straws.

On the key play, Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, who had already homered and driven in another run, dribbled a grounder up the first base line. Yankees reliever Dellin Betances fielded, and with Correa running on the grass between him and first baseman Mark Teixeira, lollipopped a throw into right field.
