Kentucky Derby 2016: Why the Derby is still best — and longest — party in sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Nyquist trainer Doug O’Neill woke up at 4:30 a.m. on Saturday in the dark and the quiet at Barn 41 at Churchill Downs.

That’s the launching point for the “Best Two Minutes in Sports,” but that might not be the appropriate label for the 142nd Kentucky Derby.

It’s the best — and arguably the longest — party in sports. It doesn’t come with the win-now divisiveness of big-time pro sports, and like any good party it offers something for everybody.
