SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — The Graveyard of Champions, as this historic racetrack is known, had buried three previous Triple Champions and on Saturday it claimed its fourth as American Pharoah was run down by Keen Ice in the 146th running of the Travers Stakes.
Keen Ice, who went off as a 16-1 long shot, won by three-quarters of a length.
Keen Ice finished in 2 minutes 1.57 seconds and earned a $670,000 first-place check. The colt paid a generous $34 to his backers among a crowd capped at 50,000 by New York racing officials. Whirlaway (1941) remains the only Triple Crown winner to capture the prestigious Midsummer Derby.
