Brought into the fold at Hendrick Motorsports with hoopla, Kahne was supposed to be the young star in a foursome of elite drivers. What everyone thought was a great move, however, didn't pan out.

Now, even Kahne knows he must produce or go away. That could be when his contract expires after the 2018 season — or sooner, if Hendrick buys him out.
"If I haven't performed by 2018, I need to leave," Kahne said Wednesday at an event in Charlotte, N.
