Justin Thomas Breaks a U.S. Open Record With a 63 in the Third Round

ERIN, Wis. — Justin Thomas shot a nine-under 63 on Saturday to equal the lowest score ever at a major, taking a third-round clubhouse lead at a helter-skelter United States Open at Erin Hills.

Thomas, wearing fluorescent pink pants, produced an electric performance that featured nine birdies and two bogeys, and that was capped by an eagle at the par-five 18th to complete the best single round, in relation to par, in United States Open history.

“I had no idea in terms of nine-under being the best in the U.S. Open,” Thomas said.

Johnny Miller owned the previous best round of eight-under 63, which he shot at the 1973 United States Open at Oakmont.
