To this point in the 2016 Summer Olympics, the USA has had a spate of heroic performances from likeable and inspiring athletes. The locals have cheered madly for Michael Phelps and Katie Ledecky, welcomed the truth-telling of Lilly King, celebrated the achievements of Simone Biles, Aly Raisman and the women’s gymnastics team, even applauded judoka Kayla Harrison — rival of Brazilian hero Mayra Aguilar, who was upset in the 78 kilogram semfinals — when she won the gold medal in one of the most popular Olympic sports in this country.
