Jeff Gordon to replace Dale Earnhardt Jr. for Indianapolis race, if needed

Jeff Gordon might return to NASCAR for the Sprint Cup race at Indianapolis. If, that is, Dale Earnhardt Jr. is unable to drive.

Earnhardt will sit out the July 17 race at New Hampshire while recovering from concussion-like symptoms. His No. 88 car will be driven by Alex Bowman.

On Friday, Hendrick Motorsports officials said Gordon, the former Cup champion in his first season of retirement, will drive in the Brickyard 400.

It remained unclear when Earnhardt would be able to return.

Gordon, who remains part of the Hendrick organization and finished a stint as a TV race analyst, has not driven a race since last season's finale at Homestead.
