Since March, Jason Pierre-Paul, the Giants’ best defensive player, has declined to sign the one-year contract offered by the Giants when they designated him as their franchise player. Pierre-Paul has instead been hoping for a long-term deal.
Those negotiations, and Pierre-Paul’s future with the Giants, were muddled Sunday in light of reports that Pierre-Paul was in the intensive care unit of a Florida hospital after injuring one of his hands in a fireworks accident Saturday night.
Several of Pierre-Paul’s teammates confirmed multiple news reports that Pierre-Paul, 26, was at Broward Health North in Deerfield Beach, Fla., receiving treatment for injuries that apparently occurred as Pierre-Paul was helping light Fourth of July fireworks in the Miami area.
