Jason Day's 9-under 63 starts Players Championship with a bang

Jason Day's record-tying 9-under 63 led a birdie barrage Thursday in the opening round of The Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

Day's sizzling start — tied for the low score on the famed Stadium Course — was good for the early lead in the so-called fifth major. However, Daydidn't put much distance between himself and the field.

In fact, among the first day's early wave, no fewer than 17 players were at 5-under or better. Bill Haas, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose and Cameron Tringale at minus-7 were two shots back of the leader and top-ranked world player.
