Australian racing driver James Davison will replace Sebastien Bourdais behind the wheel of the No. 18 Dale Coyne Racing Honda for the 101st running of the Indianapolis 500, multiple outlets have confirmed.
Davison has two previous starts at the Indianapolis 500, with a best finish of 16th in 2014.
The 30-year-old will fill in for Bourdais after the Frenchman suffered a hard crash during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500 on Saturday. Bourdais underwent surgery to repair a fractured pelvis Saturday night.
Davison will be able to drive in a practice session on Monday and one again on Friday – Carb Day – ahead of Sunday’s race.
