SAN JOSE, Calif. — John Tavares scored twice, including a goal 36 seconds into the game, and the Islanders hung on to beat the San Jose Sharks, 4-2, on Tuesday night.
Mikhail Grabovski and Johnny Boychuk also scored for the Islanders (8-5-3), who had lost five of their previous six games.
Thomas Greiss, for the first time facing the team that drafted him, made 34 saves as the Islanders swept the season series by winning in regulation at San Jose for the first time since February 2003.
Joel Ward and Brent Burns scored for the Sharks, who are 3-8 since they opened the season with four straight wins.
