UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Pulsating chants of “Let’s Go Islanders” reverberated throughout the 43-year-old Nassau Coliseum on Sunday even before the Islanders took the ice to warm up.
The Islanders were playing the Washington Capitals in Game 3 of their opening round series, which was tied 1-1, and 15 seconds into overtime John Tavares nudged the puck past Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby to seal the Islanders victory, 2-1.
A raucous celebration followed the quick goal, which gave the Islanders their first win in overtime since 1993.
The teams will return here for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference series on Tuesday night.
