Indianapolis 500 lineup: James Hinchcliffe wins pole year after near-death crash

IndyCar driver James Hinchcliffe is lucky to be alive after wrecking in last season's preparation for the Indianapolis 500, but now the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver will lead the field to the green flag in the 100th running of the prestigious race.

Hinchcliffe, who almost bled to death after being impaled by a piece of the car's suspension during an Indy 500 practice run last year, posted a four-lap average Sunday at the 2.5-mile track with a speed of 230.760 mph to take the pole over Josef Newgarden and Ryan Hunter-Reay.

Team Penske, which enjoyed a $1 million victory from Joey Logano in Saturday's NASCAR All-Star Race, will look to continue the Holy Week of motorsports with Will Power (starting sixth), Simon Pagenaud (eighth), Helio Castroneves (ninth), defending 500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya (17th) looking to provide owner Roger Penske with his 17th Indianapolis 500 victory.
