Curtain Call Remembered Fondly
To the Sports Editor:
Re “Unpublished Black History: Catching One Last Glimpse of Ebbets Field,” Feb. 19: The photograph of Roy Campanella in a wheelchair, with his No. 39 jersey and bat, in an empty Ebbets Field evokes a remembrance of my own personal encounter with this great catcher in his wheelchair.
I was a young teacher at Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. The students had voted to present the school’s annual Lincoln Award to this renowned former baseball player.
Another teacher and I were asked to await his arrival, lift him from the car to his wheelchair and take him to the stage of the school’s auditorium.
