Patriots Inspire a Golf-Course Distraction

Re “N.F.L.’s Leader Finds Authority Is Not Absolute,” Sept. 4: Recently, a conversation about the Patriots arose on a serene New England golf course. We discussed the judge’s pointing out the N.F.L.’s lack of hard evidence surrounding the deflated footballs. I mentioned that criminals are convicted on circumstantial evidence and that the Patriots have a history of cheating. I was quickly rebuffed. I was told Bill Belichick’s cheating ways were not relevant to the deflation investigation. I countered with Peyton Manning’s assertion that the Patriots bug the visitors’ locker room.
