In stirring tribute, Jeff Gordon salutes friend, rival Tony Stewart

Jeff Gordon addressed his fellow Sprint Cup drivers before Sunday's race at Indianapolis. His subject: Tony Stewart.

It's a special day at the Brickyard 400. Gordon is racing in place of ailing Dale Earnhardt Jr., and this is the last Cup race for Stewart, a Hoosier and two-time winner at his home track.

Gordon's words hit home. Drivers and crews, along with others in attendance, gave a standing ovation to Stewart, a tribute to a future Hall of Fame member and three-time Cup champion.

It probably was not what Stewart wanted. In Friday's media session he basically said he didn't want the spotlight, was glad Gordon was there to take it away and promised he wouldn't get emotional.
