Tom Herman could’ve left Houston after just one year, and it wouldn’t have surprised too many people.
Herman led Houston to a 13-1 record, the same record it had in 2011 before Kevin Sumlin bolted for Texas A&M. The soon-to-be 41-year-old coach is the default candidate every time a Power 5 coaching vacancy pops up.
It wouldn’t have surprised anybody, except for maybe Cougars quarterback Greg Ward Jr.
“One of our core values is honesty and Coach Herman told us he wasn’t going to leave,” Ward Jr. told Sporting News. “We had to trust him and trust our core values.
