WASHINGTON, N.J. — A star high school quarterback in New Jersey died after sustaining an injury an during a game, school officials said Saturday.
Evan Murray of Warren Hills Regional High School was injured in a game against Summit High School on Friday night. Murray, a three-sport athlete, had been his team’s starting quarterback for three years.
A statement from the interim superintendent, Gary Bowen, said the school community was “deeply saddened” by Murray’s death. Bowen said a cause of death had not yet been determined. Authorities said an autopsy was planned.
People who attended the game said that Murray, 17, walked off the field after taking a hit in the backfield late in the second quarter.
