BERLIN — Hamburg residents on Sunday rejected the city’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics in a referendum.
Of the 650,000 votes cast in Hamburg and in Kiel, where the sailing events would have been held, 51.7 percent were against the Olympic bid.
This is the second time in two years that the German public has turned down the chance to bid for an Olympics. In a 2013 referendum, Munich residents rejected the city’s bid to host the 2022 Winter Games.
Hamburg had been set to compete against Budapest, Paris, Los Angeles and Rome to stage the Summer Games, with the International Olympic Committee due to announce its decision on Sept.
