VANCOUVER — The U.S. knew this would happen.
Back in December during the World Cup draw, America was randomly placed into Group D, also known as the “Group of Death.” The USA, second in the world in FIFA’s rankings, would play No. 5 Sweden, No. 10 Australia and No. 33 Nigeria. That’s three top-10 teams in one group, plus the best team from Africa.
Only group F had two top-10 teams.
And though some scoffed at the term “Group of Death,” it’s lived up to the reputation. Heading into the final group play matches, all four teams are fighting to move onto the Round of 16, and three could win the group based on Tuesday’s results.
