Two years ago, when the Giants named Ben McAdoo their new offensive coordinator, the team co-owner John Mara, who approved the hiring, nonetheless acknowledged that he did not know Ben McAdoo from Bob McAdoo, the former Knicks forward.
Mara obviously knows all about Ben McAdoo now.
With Mara’s urging, the Giants on Wednesday night were close to finalizing a multiyear contract that would make McAdoo the team’s new coach replacing Tom Coughlin, according to people briefed on the negotiations who were not authorized to speak about them publicly.
After interviewing five other candidates in addition to McAdoo in the last nine days, the Giants quickly made the decision to offer the job to McAdoo, who coached for eight seasons in Green Bay before joining the Giants.
